The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel by American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. The story is set in the Jazz Age on Long Island, near New York City. The novel depicts first-person narrator Nick Carraway’s interactions with Jay Gatsby. Gatsby is a mysterious millionaire obsessed with reuniting with his former lover, Daisy Buchanan.
The primary message of The Great Gatsby is a critique of the American Dream. It exposes the superficiality and the moral decay that can accompany the pursuit of wealth and status. This ultimately leads to disillusionment and tragedy.
Many of us either read The Great Gatsby in school or because of curiosity. It has always been deemed an American Classic. I remember it left an odd impression on me. I thought many people from the Northeast fell under either the Jay Gatsby or Daisy Buchanan type. Maybe it was because the narrator assumed the role of the young southern writer, making his way in the big city, and unwittingly finding himself in the opulent world of Gatsby.
