Quote to Ponder ~ Ted Lasso
“You know what the happiest animal on Earth is? It’s a goldfish. You know why? Got a 10-second memory. Be a goldfish, Sam.”
Words of encouragement from everyone’s favorite fictional Premier coach.
A simple idea with huge benefits. There are moments when we all screw up. But depending on the situation, there will be time to reflect upon and analyze our mistake after the fact. We usually need to stay focused on the present. We can put the mistake aside. This way, we can complete the overall task or goal. In other words, acknowledge the mistake and move on. Don’t stay in it, while the moment is moving forward.
Assess your mistakes at the right time. Mistakes are inevitable, but when they happen, we face a choice: stay stuck in the moment or move forward with purpose. The key is knowing when to reflect and learn versus when to let go and act. Take a soccer analogy—you miss a shot, emotions flare, and suddenly you’re caught in the swirl of frustration. Meanwhile, the game moves on, offering fresh opportunities that could be game-changers. If you’re still stuck on what went wrong, those chances will pass you by unnoticed.
Instead, embrace the goldfish mindset. Allow the mistake to teach you in its proper moment. Learn, adapt, and grow from the experience. But don’t let it hold you hostage—wallowing keeps you focused inward, disconnected from the present and the people around you. There’s power in shifting your focus outward, back to the larger goal, back to your team, back to the moment that’s still unfolding.
“Be a goldfish.”
