Pablo Honey ~Radiohead | Then and Now

Today marks the 25th anniversary of Radiohead’s debut studio album, Pablo Honey. Interestingly, they got the title idea from a Jerky Boys prank call skit. I say, interestingly, because the album is home to their mega smash hit, “Creep” and who know the Jerky Boys’ humor made it across the pond? Let alone influenced the title name of the album that catapulted Radiohead into international musical attention. While reading this, some of you asking, what’s a Jerky Boy?

Full transparency, Pablo Honey wasn’t the album I discovered the musical genius of Radiohead. Sure, I knew of “Creep”, I wasn’t living under a rock. I just didn’t buy into Radiohead until the release of, The Bends. I happened to love The Bends so much, that I felt I needed to go back to Pablo Honey. Glad I did.

“But I’m a creep
I’m a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don’t belong here”

Funny, Pablo Honey didn’t blow people away when first released. “Creep” turned heads, but overall, there were too many comparisons of Radiohead to U2, Nirvana, The Cure and what was going on in the world of grunge to separate themselves from the crowd.

In retrospect, which is the point of this review, Pablo Honey is solid album. Turns out, “Creep” isn’t the only strong song featured. There is a whole list of other fun rock filled songs that lead up well to The Bends.
